本作是首次以世界范围内人类共同经历的新冠病毒疫情为主题，基于真实事件，创作原创剧本并进行电影化的日本作品。 故事的背景是2020年2月3日停靠横滨港、随后爆发日本首次新冠病毒集体感染的豪华邮轮“钻石公主号”。船上共有来自世界56个国家的3711名乘客与船员。在横滨港停靠后，通过健康检查和对有症状者进行的样本采集，确认了10名感染者，由此日本首次面临治疗方法尚未明了的未知病毒威胁。 在这种情况下，奔赴疫情最前线的，是那些将“拯救生命”作为最优先任务、甚至暂时抛下家庭的医生与护士们。
