When, at the beginning of Deus Irae, Father Javier stares at a crucifix, his expressions and his hands suggest that the nerves are consuming him. 根据李佩甫的小说《无边无际的早晨》改编。40年代一个大年初一的清晨，大李庄村长老黑埋葬了一具女尸，并收养了女尸旁边的男婴，给孩子取名“治国”。勤奋的治国考上了县中学，“文化大革命”时期他带头闹事，被老黑一巴掌打回了大李庄。后来，他考上了省委党校大专班。毕业后，回来当了乡长，因大李庄的计划生育拖了全乡的后腿，他训斥了老黑。不久国家扶贫铁路要穿越大李庄的祖坟，老黑和村民以死相维护，治国说服了大家，带头挖了自己母亲的坟。数年后，治国当上了邻县的县长，临行前，老黑给他送来了“老娘土”。
