　　上海租界接连发生蹊跷命案，雷击致人死亡案还没查出个头绪，一名神秘男子在惨遭暗杀、用血指写下两横后暴毙于巡捕房。案情蹊跷、舆论压力随之而来，陈探长受命侦察。和陈探长同时对案情表现出兴趣的，还有陈探长的儿子陈天生。天生留学德国，回国后在巡捕房做了翻译员。
　　在对雷击案死者的勘察中，天生从死者身上烧残的一块衣角、和从口袋里掏出的残缺照片上看出点名堂。拿着残缺的照片，探长父子求证于考古学罗教授，从罗教授那里得知照片背景石碑上的文字是蒙古语“受命于天、既寿永昌”的意思。受这句咒语护佑的陵墓，一般下葬的是蒙古大汗。
　　从罗教授家回来，两起蹊跷命案与秦始皇()的传国玉玺有关的推断，在陈家父子的心里打定。如此一来，两个遇害者系照片上五名盗墓者中的两个，也在陈家父子的心里达成共识。再次拜访罗教授，陈探长挖掘出一个叫“王胡子”的盗墓者外，细心的天生好像还有别的收获。
　　满租界查找“王胡子”，却在王胡子的老窝发现一具支分的尸体。面对血腥残忍的现场，随天生一起赶来的罗教授爱女罗佩琦的表现，让天生略有所思。照片上一起盗墓的五个人先后死了三个，除王胡子还没有下落以外，那个被黑色纱巾裹得严严实实的第五个人依然是个迷。
　　罗教授急着赴美治疗腿疾。惜别的码头上，天生装扮的神秘刺客，让装病的罗教授露出马脚。罗教授父女当即被扣留。在罗家公寓，两声枪响中罗教授和潜入罗家的王胡子倒在血泊之中。为了给儿子的女朋友罗佩琦开脱防卫杀人的罪行，陈探长故意向媒体透露消息，引起舆论支持，无罪释放罗佩琦。
　　罗教授和王胡子死于非命，传国玉玺下落不明。罗教授下葬那天，天生在肃穆的人群中骇然指出传国玉玺就在罗教授的棺木里。入土为安的习俗，最终没有阻止天生开棺查验的执拗。铁的事实面前，罗佩琦代父盗墓、委曲求全保护国宝的迷团一一解开。善恶有果，真爱无声，冰冷的铁窗外，是天生等待佩琦幽怨的痴情。

简介：Fraught with over obvious symbolism, Hartley's early feature is nonetheless a joy to watch. Hal here shows us his uncanny ability to cast his characters perfectly came early in his career.　　Adrienne Shelley is a near perfect foil to herself, equal parts annoying teen burgeoning in her sexuality (though using sex for several years); obsessed with doom and inspired by idealism gone wrong she is deceptively – and simultaneously – complex and simple. Her Audrey inspires so many levels of symbolism it is almost embarrassingly rich (e.g., her modeling career beginning with photos of her foot – culminating her doing nude (but unseen) work; Manhattan move; Europe trip; her stealing, then sleeping with the mechanics wrench, etc.)　　As Josh, Robert Burke gives an absolutely masterful performance. A reformed prisonerpenitent he returns to his home town to face down past demons, accept his lot and begin a new life. Dressed in black, and repeatedly mistaken for a priest, he corrects everyone (I'm a mechanic), yet the symbolism is rich he abstains from alcohol, he practices celibacy (is, in fact a virgin), and seemingly has taken on vows of poverty, and humility as well. The humility seems hardest to swallow seeming, at times, almost false, a pretense. Yet, as we learn more of Josh we see genuineness in his modesty, that his humility is indeed earnest and believable. What seems ironic is the character is fairly forthright in his simplicity, yet so richly drawn it becomes the viewer who wants to make him out as more than what he actually is. A fascinatingly written character, perfectly played.　　The scene between Josh and Jane (a wonderful, young Edie Falco . . . You need a woman not a girl) is hilarious . . . real. But Hartley can't leave it as such and his trick, having the actors repeat the dialogue over-and-over becomes frustratingly arty and annoying . . . until again it becomes hilarious. What a terrific sense of bizarre reality this lends the film (like kids in a perpetual am notare too argument).　　Hartley's weaves all of a small neighborhood's idiosyncrasies into a tapestry of seeming stereotypes but which delves far beneath the surface, the catalyst being that everyone believes they know what the unbelievable truth of the title is, yet no two people can agree (including our hero) on what exactly that truth is. A wonderful little movie with some big ideas.
