我们天生喜欢香，极少喜欢臭。自然规律也显示：香料能使物品保存持久。这其实已经用气味指明了方向，所谓正道，就是千古流芳。于是在古人面前，很多不同类别的名词汇成了一种通感：芬芳、侠骨、馨香、大义、正气、至善、……古人相信，任何选择都会自带气味标签。但吊诡的是，在历史重要节点上那些意见截然相反的人，无不坚称自己都是正气使然。而作为后来人，我们也确实发现，随着深入了解双方，越来越难以评判。香，究竟是客观共识，还是辩证的转化？本片选取与五位古人命运相连的香料，串起他们曾经在那些重要节点上的冲突和选择。
