 1898年6月11日，光绪皇帝向全国颁布了"明定国是"诏书，中国近代史上轰轰烈烈的戊戌变法运动开始了。为了网罗天下英才，军机处两次拍电报催促谭嗣同火速进京。谭嗣同辞别了妻子李闰，踏上征途。途中，黄河两岸饿殍满地，哀鸿遍野的景象深深震动了谭嗣同，他更坚信只有变法才能救中国。与此同时，在颐和园的慈禧太后及心腹老臣们不动声色地把辅佐皇上变法、为皇上保荐人才的军机大臣翁同和撤了职，遣送回乡。提升荣禄为直隶总督兼北洋大臣，把持兵权，统摄北洋三军，给刚刚开始的变法维新一个警告和打击。谭嗣同到京后，马上受到光绪皇帝的召见。他横溢的才思和无畏的胆识备受皇上赞赏。光绪皇帝激动地授予他四品章京衔，命他在军机处供职，希望他成为中兴之臣。革新志士康有为、杨深秀、林旭、刘光第等在得月楼设宴为谭嗣同洗尘。他们烛下长谈，共谋维新大业。兵部侍郎袁世凯也前来拜访谭嗣同，并献五百两银子，对维新大业略表微衷。礼部尚书怀塔布扣押了主事王照奏请皇上游历东西各国的折子，革新志士抓住了这件事，奏请皇上，撤了礼部六堂官怀塔布、许应骙等。光绪皇帝依靠谭嗣同、康有为变法图强的决心，深深地震惊了以太后为首的封建专制势力。此时，谭嗣同、康有为等准备乘胜追击，奏请皇上开设懋勤殿，驾空昏庸老臣，实行朝钢独断。太后和荣禄也频频来往，密室共议。他们一面调动军队做好防范，一面筹划9月天津阅兵，准备到时废掉皇上。新旧两党的斗争达到白热化。在这关键时刻，光绪皇帝遭到太后的软禁，相知相爱的珍妃亦被打入冷宫。康有为、谭嗣同等了5天不见君面，只得到一道光绪设法传出来的要他们设法相救的特谕。他们当时都惊愕不已，束手无策。谭嗣同突然想到兵部侍郎袁世凯，决定孤注一掷，夜访法华寺，求助于袁世凯。看了皇上亲笔手谕，袁世凯万分震惊。他慷慨陈词发誓要效犬马之劳。但在打发下了谭嗣同后，袁世凯权衡利弊，最后，决定投靠太后，出卖了谭嗣同和维新大业。慈禧太后得到密报，连夜返回紫禁城，发动了震惊中外的戊戌政变，再度训政。除康有为、梁启超逃往国外外，革新志士纷纷被捕。谭嗣同谢绝了梁启超、日本友人及好友大刀王五的诚恳相救，决心以一死来惊醒黎民百姓。谭嗣同的爱妻突然来到了北京，没想到相聚竟是死别。残烛前，夫妻凄然把酒相对。谭嗣同等6位维新派志士被押往菜市口刑场。谭嗣同为无力回天而感叹，为死得其所而慰藉。他们把满腔热血喷洒在祖国的大地上。

简介：Fraught with over obvious symbolism, Hartley's early feature is nonetheless a joy to watch. Hal here shows us his uncanny ability to cast his characters perfectly came early in his career.　　Adrienne Shelley is a near perfect foil to herself, equal parts annoying teen burgeoning in her sexuality (though using sex for several years); obsessed with doom and inspired by idealism gone wrong she is deceptively – and simultaneously – complex and simple. Her Audrey inspires so many levels of symbolism it is almost embarrassingly rich (e.g., her modeling career beginning with photos of her foot – culminating her doing nude (but unseen) work; Manhattan move; Europe trip; her stealing, then sleeping with the mechanics wrench, etc.)　　As Josh, Robert Burke gives an absolutely masterful performance. A reformed prisonerpenitent he returns to his home town to face down past demons, accept his lot and begin a new life. Dressed in black, and repeatedly mistaken for a priest, he corrects everyone (I'm a mechanic), yet the symbolism is rich he abstains from alcohol, he practices celibacy (is, in fact a virgin), and seemingly has taken on vows of poverty, and humility as well. The humility seems hardest to swallow seeming, at times, almost false, a pretense. Yet, as we learn more of Josh we see genuineness in his modesty, that his humility is indeed earnest and believable. What seems ironic is the character is fairly forthright in his simplicity, yet so richly drawn it becomes the viewer who wants to make him out as more than what he actually is. A fascinatingly written character, perfectly played.　　The scene between Josh and Jane (a wonderful, young Edie Falco . . . You need a woman not a girl) is hilarious . . . real. But Hartley can't leave it as such and his trick, having the actors repeat the dialogue over-and-over becomes frustratingly arty and annoying . . . until again it becomes hilarious. What a terrific sense of bizarre reality this lends the film (like kids in a perpetual am notare too argument).　　Hartley's weaves all of a small neighborhood's idiosyncrasies into a tapestry of seeming stereotypes but which delves far beneath the surface, the catalyst being that everyone believes they know what the unbelievable truth of the title is, yet no two people can agree (including our hero) on what exactly that truth is. A wonderful little movie with some big ideas.
