Ja-young hopes to uncover clues about her older sister, who went missing when they were children — but what begins as a playful ritual soon spirals into a terrifying experience none of them can handle. The séance, conducted in a confined and claustrophobic space, is rendered with chilling realism, adhering to the conventions of classic horror. The film skillfully builds tension through the occult element of spirit summoning, while also revealing the slow unraveling of friendships and long-buried secrets, maintaining strong dramatic momentum throughout. Standing apart from typical teen horror, the film boasts high genre polish and gripping performances from actors like Kim Yerim and Lee Chanhyeong. With its immersive terror that makes viewers feel as if they're part of the ritual — and a finale that defies all expectations — it leaves a lasting impression.

　　Director Sisworo Gautama Putra does an expert job of ably creating and sustaining a powerfully eerie and unnerving otherworldly atmosphere. Moreover, Putra does a totally convincing job of evoking a thoroughly believable mundane everyday reality that's ripped asunder by bizarre and inexplicable supernatural phenomenon. Better still, Putra keeps the pace slow, yet steady throughout, uses violence in a shocking, but restrained manner and gradually builds up a tremendous amount of harrowing tension before pulling out all the stops with a genuinely terrifying conclusion in which all hell quite literally breaks lose. This film even offers a rich, colorful and illuminating depiction of a fascinatingly different culture and its strongly held religious beliefs. An extremely solid and satisfying foreign fright feature.

　　Faces of Anne relies heavily on elements of the slasher film – and in many ways, that’s exactly what it is. But the film is also a puzzle, whose central question – Why is Anne here? – allows us to explore theories as to its solution until the very last moment. Are we inside a video game? An escape room? The mind of someone with multiple personalities? The elaborate and nihilistic fantasy of a deranged serial killer? It’s nothing new to remark that the best horror films are often those that reflect the fears of society; this film builds a clever – and viscerally terrifying – analogy of some of the difficulties faced by today’s young people.
