家常便飯看似平平無奇，其實講究精打細算、老少咸宜兼健康美味，有賴一家之「煮」的巧手廚藝。十四名參賽者各自拿出獨門食譜，接受主持薛家燕、冼靖峰、關楓馨、阮浩棕、評審「三姐」蕭秀香，還有星級嘉賓及其家人的試食點評。十四人分成七組上演煮場爭霸，比拼指定食材、自選拿手兩道菜式；七位勝方直接晉級，負方最多「美味星章」一人亦可出線。八人隨後以四人一組對壘，每組最高分者共兩人躋身終極決戰，角逐「冠軍霸煮」寶座！
第五届CCTV相声大赛于2010年10月2日首播，每天有4个相声段子参加角逐，至10月8日结束。每个参赛节目的出场顺序都是由选手抽签决定的，每场比赛除参赛节目之外还有一个由历届相声大赛获大奖的演员或相声名家表演；连续6天的决赛结束后，10月8日晚还播出了相声大赛的颁奖晚会《今夜相声灿烂》。
